A surprise party.
Julia locks herself in the guest bathroom, and she doesn’t seem to like the idea of going back out there. Someone will come and get her eventually.
As a darkly comic reality begins to unfold, Julia rattles on about her perspective of life. Something isn’t quite right as she slips between shifting realities. Cynical and disillusioned or just not special enough? A disturbingly destructive violence starts to creep in.
It’s not her surprise party. It’s not her party at all.
The story pushes boundaries and delves into a darkly comic and fragmented exploration of identity, set within a shifting symbolic space, the bathroom.
It delves into the tensions between nature and nurture, violence and gender, identity and societal expectations, fantasy and disillusionment, while reflecting on the fragility of everyday life and human connection.
What are the barriers we build between ourselves and others?
The show investigates our need for connection and the invisible cultural and social forces that keep us apart, confine us within labels, and makes us feel like we always need something more. It also moves away from trauma-based storytelling, rejecting the fetishisation of victimhood and a culture that rewards it.
The piece invites audiences to question how we are shaped by both nature and nurture, and what that reveals about the world we live in.
